Valley Forge, Pennsylvania
A sharp intake of breath. She grabbed his hand quickly, nails biting his wrist.
“There, do you see?”
Yeah, he saw. He saw a tangled mess ahead. No surprise she was so enchanted — messes were her purveyance. God knows she’d blown through his life like a demon-possessed banshee, and here they were standing before her very own House of Leaves. Fucking appropriate, if she wanted his opinion, but he knew she didn’t.
“So where’s the hallway?”
“I’m standing in it,” she whispered, shoulders shaking as the sobs wrenched forth. There was nothing left to say, so he grasped the only thing he could — the double-edged sword of salvation and destruction.
“Wanna take a ride with me?”
They walked slowly, deliberately, retracing their steps through the perfect forest. And as they drove away from the many-mirrored mansion — beautiful, decayed — the taillights flashed red upon the walls.
