Thomaston, Alabama
tangle me, untangle me, lay me down in spring-drenched grass
and drive the fear out of me
tie me, untie me, break me, slake me, shake me, wake me, take me
out of the dry-mouthed misery
into the well-spring of spirit.
mangle me, jangle me, spread blankets upon the sun-warmed earth
and breathe my life back into me
hold me, unfold me, spit curses until I spit them back
rake your nails across the soul-torn edges
and divide the howling between.
and when the day is done, take me by the hand
call my name deep and low
and holler me home.
