And so, life slides back into a continuum.
Coffee mug is shoved into my hand and I am prodded towards my desk, where I collapse into my chair. Blearily, I peer at the screen. A flurry of good mornings and sleep wells? later, I’m staring down mid-morning murkiness, tripping through roast beef and swiss for lunch, a flurry of “goodbyes” and “I love yous,” stretching lazily toward late afternoon. The sun is low and juts through my blinds earlier than usual.
Get up to close the shades and startle a flock of blackbirds that has gathered in the side yard. Happy, sad, then low, so low. Perseverance pays off, and a lengthy project draws to a close on a high note. Get up, cat steals my chair. Snap, snap, scat cat. Curl up in a ball, favorite blanket wrapped around me as I purr in the sun.
Then it’s bye, bye, later, later, ttyl — carry my blanket to bed and get serious about slumber. Crunch of car wheels on gravel and it’s hey, hi, how are you, and then I’m standing at the stove, onions and tomatoes frying down, sausage and hashbrowns about to join them.
I missed this.
