Boston, Massachusetts

No, it’s not Italy. This is the view I see every day as I look up from my computer and gaze out the window, trying to write. It’s an odd feeling, being so completely on the word side of things again. I think I needed this break from photography.

As most of you know, I left my camera in Alabama and had to have it shipped to me. It was broken when it arrived. so tomorrow I will have to brave the T, also known as Boston’s subway system, in order to take it to be repaired. Meanwhile, the photo department at the Monitor was kind enough to loan me a Canon EOS Rebel.

Yeah. I know what you all are thinking. My hatred for Canon runs deep. But here’s the thing. This is a new place, and the old ways of thinking don’t really work here. It’s a camera and it shoots, and you know what? It’s pretty cool. It’s lightweight, and quite honestly, I’ve just been throwing it on “program” and letting it do its thing.

It’s sort of a relief to not fiddle with camera settings, to just go back to shooting when shooting was fun. I’m sure it will frustrate me quickly, but right now, while I’m wandering around exploring, I don’t really want to see the city as a photojournalist. And since I’m walking everywhere I go, I don’t honestly want to lug 30 pounds of camera gear with me.

That’s it from me for now. Tonight is my Friday night, and I am looking at two solid days off. I think I’ll wander down Newbury Street to the Prudential Center for an evening at Barnes and Nobles.

Then again, it’s getting dark and I don’t like to go out at night. So. We’ll see.
