So another year passes, and I’m no closer to understanding than I ever was. I used to write something special on this date. I don’t feel like writing anything tonight. Maybe everything has been said. Maybe there’s nothing left to say. Maybe there never was.
We had a special section in the paper that week. The spring edition. I had a photo on the front not unlike this one. Something cheery. Something that spoke of life, rebirth, renewal. I remember thinking it was pretty. Maybe pretty enough to camouflage the truth. Maybe bright enough to obliterate the darkness.
I’ve written thousands of words, but I can’t rewrite history, no matter how hard I try.
So I won’t bother.
If you want to read an “anniversary” message from me this year, then so be it. Go read the old words. Go scavenge the old hurts. I don’t feel up to it tonight, and I doubt you care anyway. Besides, I relive it often enough for all of us. I forgive, but I’ll never ever forget. Je manquerai vous jusqu’au jour je meurs.
