Decorative drawer pulls grace this antique California type-case located at the University of Alabama library. In the early days of printing, cold type was stored in the individual compartments of boxes such as this.
Capital letters were stored in the top compartments, while the more frequently used smaller letters were placed in the bottom drawers — hence today’s terms “upper and lowercase.”
