This is an image of the bride’s daughter from the wedding I shot a few weeks ago. She was sitting on the bed, patiently waiting for someone to help her put on her shoes.

We all need someone to take our hand sometimes, to give us direction, to comfort us when we are down. I am happy tonight in that giddy-silly little girl way of mine, all because someone took my hand for the ten-thousandth time and led me somewhere better.

Sometimes I don’t know what I need. Sometimes I’m not sure how to get where I want to go. Sometimes I just want someone to walk with me. Sometimes I have everything I want right in front of me and don’t even know it. And when I see it, when I finally open my eyes — I am so overwhelmed by love that I can’t see straight, can’t form the words I want to say.

Some things that are found are better than anything we ever thought we lost; some paths that are chosen are the ones we had to take to lead us to where we stand today.

Children walk in whatever shoes they are given, reach out to take whatever hand is offered. Adults have a choice. I’m grateful for every choice I have ever made, even the bad ones, because they gave me something better, more real, more pure than I ever could have imagined when I was a child.
